A Korean age calculator converts your date of birth into the 3 ages used in South Korea: traditional Korean age, international age and year age. Enter your birthday and the calculator shows all 3 side by side, how far Korean age runs ahead of your international age, and the date each one goes up next.
The calculator gives 4 main benefits: the right Korean age to the day, both directions of conversion, any past or future date, and the year-age date for drinking and smoking in Korea. K-pop and K-drama fans use it to read Korean ages, learners of the Korean language use it for honorifics, and expats use it for forms and age limits. It has 4 parts: 3 input modes, the 3-age result, a set of extra stats and a step chart that shows each system ticking over.
What Is Korean Age?
Korean age (세는 나이, se-neun nai, "counting age") is the traditional Korean way of counting age, in which a newborn is 1 year old and everyone gains a year on January 1. Your birthday plays no part. The formula is Korean age = current year − birth year + 1, so everyone born in the same year shares the same Korean age.
The rules lead to a famous result: a baby born on December 31 is 2 years old in Korean age the next morning.
A baby born on December 31, 2025. On December 31, 2026, the first birthday, the international age catches up to 1 while the Korean age is still 2.

Three Different Age Systems Used in Korea
There are 3 different age systems used in Korea: Korean age (세는 나이), international age (만 나이, man nai) and year age (연 나이, yeon nai). They differ in the starting number and the day the age goes up.
Korean age
Traditional. Still heard in conversation, no longer used in law.
International age
Official since June 28, 2023, for documents, contracts and medicine.
Year age
Kept for drinking, smoking, military service and school entry.
Korean Age vs International Age
Korean age is 2 years higher than international age from January 1 until your birthday, and 1 year higher from your birthday to December 31. Jungkook of BTS, born on September 1, 1997, shows the pattern through 2026.

| Date | Korean age | International age | Year age |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 January 2026 | 30 | 28 | 29 |
| 31 August 2026 | 30 | 28 | 29 |
| 1 September 2026 | 30 | 29 | 29 |
| 31 December 2026 | 30 | 29 | 29 |
Three clocks, one birthday
Each lane is 1 counting system. Korean age jumps every January 1, year age jumps on January 1 too but starts at 0, and international age only moves on your birthday. Drag through time to compare.
Why Are You One Year Old at Birth in the Traditional Korean System?
You are 1 year old at birth in the traditional Korean system since it counts the year of life you are in, not the years you have finished. A newborn is in the 1st year of life, so the count starts at 1, the same way the 1st day of a trip is day 1. A second explanation, often given in Korea, says the 1 covers the roughly 9 months spent in the womb.
Counting years of life
Korean age names the year you are living in. Birth starts year 1; January 1 starts year 2. International age counts finished years, so it starts at 0.
An East Asian tradition
China, Japan and Vietnam once counted age the same way. South Korea kept it in official use longer than the others, until 2023.
Korean Age Chart by Birth Year
The Korean age chart shows the Korean age in 2026 for each birth year from 1960 to 2026. Korean age stays the same all year, so the birth year alone gives the answer. International age is 2 lower before your birthday and 1 lower after it.
Big number: Korean age in 2026. Small number: year age (연 나이). The highlighted year, 2007, is the youngest birth year that can legally buy alcohol and tobacco in South Korea in 2026, from January 1, at year age 19.
When Is Korean Age Used in Everyday Life?
Korean age shows up in everyday life in 8 places, including the Korean language, birth-year talk and some legal age limits. Since 2023 international age has replaced it in official use, but age still shapes how people speak to each other.
Honorifics
Age decides polite or casual speech. Older friends are 누나 (noona) or 언니 (eonni), younger ones 동생 (dongsaeng).
Same-age friends
People born in the same year are 동갑 (donggap) and can talk as equals.
Birth-year talk
Many Koreans give a birth year instead of an age: "I'm a '97" (97년생).
Drinking and smoking
Allowed from January 1 of the year you reach year age 19.
Military service
Conscription rules count by birth year, using year age.
School entry
Children start school with others born in the same year.
K-dramas and K-pop
Older shows, profiles and fan sites often list Korean ages.
Birthdays
Seaweed soup (미역국) on your birthday, plus 100-day (백일) and first-birthday (돌) parties for babies.
How Birthdays and New Year's Day Affect Korean Age
New Year's Day raises Korean age and year age by 1 for everyone, while a birthday raises only international age. Your birth date decides how long the 2-year gap lasts each year: a January 1 birthday never has it, and a December 31 birthday has it for 364 days.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Old Am I in Korean Age?
You are 1 or 2 years older in Korean age than in international age: 2 years older before your birthday each year and 1 year older after it. Your Korean age is the current year minus your birth year, plus 1. Someone born in 1997 is 30 in Korean age all through 2026. Enter your date of birth in the Korean age calculator to see all 3 Korean ages at once.
How Do I Calculate My Korean Age?
To calculate your Korean age, subtract your birth year from the current year and add 1. Your birthday makes no difference. For a 1997 birth year in 2026: 2026 − 1997 + 1 = 30.
What Is the Formula for Korean Age?
The formula for Korean age is Korean age = current year − birth year + 1. From your international age, the formula is international age + 2 before your birthday this year, and international age + 1 on or after it.
What Is the Difference Between Korean Age and American Age?
Korean age is 1 or 2 years higher than American age. American age, the same as international age, starts at 0 and goes up on each birthday. Korean age starts at 1 and goes up for everyone on January 1. Jungkook of BTS, born on September 1, 1997, is 28 in American age and 30 in Korean age on August 31, 2026.
Why Is Korean Age Different from International Age?
Korean age is different from international age for 2 reasons: a baby is 1 at birth, and everyone gains a year on January 1 instead of on their birthday. The first rule adds 1 year all the time; the second adds 1 more between New Year's Day and your birthday.
Are You One Year Old at Birth in Korea?
Yes, you are 1 year old at birth in the traditional Korean age system. Under the international age system, which South Korea made official in 2023, a newborn is 0, as in most of the world.
Why Can Korean Age Be Two Years Higher?
Korean age is 2 years higher from January 1 until your birthday. On January 1 your Korean age goes up, while your international age waits for your birthday. A baby born on December 31, 2025 turned 2 in Korean age on January 1, 2026, at 1 day old.
Does Korean Age Increase on January 1?
Yes, Korean age increases on January 1 for everyone, whatever their birthday. Year age (연 나이) goes up on January 1 too. Only international age (만 나이) waits for your birthday.
Do Koreans Still Use Korean Age in 2026?
No, Koreans do not use Korean age for anything official in 2026; international age has been the legal standard since June 28, 2023. Some people, often older Koreans, still use Korean age in conversation, and year age still sets the legal ages for drinking, smoking, military service and school entry.
Did South Korea Abolish the Korean Age System?
Yes, South Korea abolished Korean age for legal and administrative use on June 28, 2023. The National Assembly passed the changes in December 2022, and from that date international age applies to contracts, official documents and public services unless a law says otherwise.
What Is the Official Age System in South Korea?
The official age system in South Korea is international age (만 나이), counted from 0 at birth and raised on each birthday. Year age remains in a few laws, such as the Youth Protection Act for alcohol and tobacco and the rules for military service.
How Do I Convert My International Age to Korean Age?
To convert your international age to Korean age, add 2 if your birthday has not come yet this year, or add 1 if it has. A 25-year-old is 27 in Korean age before their birthday and 26 after it. Pick "From my age" in the calculator to do this without a date of birth.
Can I Calculate My Korean Age for a Past or Future Date?
Yes, you can calculate your Korean age for any past or future date. Change the "On date" field and the calculator returns your Korean, international and year age on that day, which helps with old documents and future plans.
Is Korean Age Based on the Lunar New Year?
No, modern Korean age goes up on January 1, the solar New Year, not on the Lunar New Year. In the past, and among some older Koreans, the extra year came at Seollal, the Lunar New Year in late January or February. This calculator uses January 1.
Is the Korean Age Calculator Free to Use?
Yes, the Korean age calculator is free to use. There is no sign-up, and your date of birth stays in your browser.
