A half birthday calculator finds the date 6 months after your birthday, the halfway point of your birthday year. Enter your date of birth, or just the month and day, and the calculator returns your next half birthday, the days left, the weekday it falls on and the exact half-year date.
The calculator gives 4 main benefits: the right date for month-end and February 29 birthdays, a countdown, quarter and three-quarter birthdays, and a side-by-side check of the calendar and exact-half methods. Parents use it for a baby's 6-month milestone and for summer-born kids who celebrate at school, and adults use it for a mid-year celebration. It has 4 parts: the date input, the result with a countdown, the quarter-birthday strip and a ring that shows where the half birthday sits in your year.
What Is a Half Birthday?
A half birthday is the date 6 calendar months after your birthday, the midpoint between one birthday and the next. Someone born on March 15 has a half birthday on September 15, and someone born on April 10 has one on October 10. Another name for it is the half-year birthday.
There are 2 ways to place the midpoint. Most people use the calendar method; the exact method splits the days of the birthday year in half.
Method 1: calendar months
The common method. Keeps the day of the month, so it is easy to remember.
Method 2: exact half
The mathematical midpoint. 2 days earlier here, since March to September has long months.

Half Birthday Chart by Birth Month
The half birthday chart pairs each birth month with the month 6 months later: January with July, February with August and so on round the year. The day of the month stays the same, except for some 29th, 30th and 31st birthdays.
Days from the 15th of the birth month to the half birthday, for the years 2023 to 2030. 6-month spans that contain February run 181 to 183 days; the 6 spans that skip February run 183 or 184 days.
Half birthdays that move to the last valid day
| Birthday | Half birthday, common year | Half birthday, leap year |
|---|---|---|
| August 29 | February 28 | February 29 |
| August 30 | February 28 | February 29 |
| August 31 | February 28 | February 29 |
| February 29 | August 29 | August 29 |
| March 31 | September 30 | September 30 |
| May 31 | November 30 | November 30 |
| October 31 | April 30 | April 30 |
| December 31 | June 30 | June 30 |
Shaded rows move to a different day. 6 months after a 31st often lands in a 30-day month (March 31 → September 30), and August 29 to 31 land in February. February 29 maps to August 29 every year.
Common Mistakes When Calculating Half Birthdays
There are 6 common mistakes when calculating half birthdays, including adding 182 days instead of 6 months, writing an impossible date and counting a baby's half birthday in weeks.
Adding 182 days
✕ March 15 + 182 days = September 13
✓ March 15 + 6 months = September 15
Writing an impossible date
✕ August 31 → "February 31"
✓ February 28, or 29 in a leap year
Counting in weeks for babies
✕ 26 weeks after January 31: August 1
✓ 6 months after: July 31
Going back 6 months
✕ "My half birthday was before my birthday this year"
✓ Both directions give the same month and day; count from your last birthday
Using the wrong February
✕ February 29 for an August 31 birthday in 2027
✓ Check the half birthday's year: 2028 is the leap year
Forgetting leap-day babies
✕ "February 29 babies have no half birthday"
✓ August 29, every single year
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Half Birthday 6 Months or 182 Days?
A half birthday is 6 calendar months after your birthday, not a fixed 182 days. 6 calendar months span 181 to 184 days, depending on which months they cover. Half of a 365-day year is 182.5 days, so the "exact half" lands 182 or 183 days after your birthday and can differ from the calendar date by 1 or 2 days.
How Leap Years Affect Half Birthdays
Leap years affect half birthdays only for birthdays on August 29, 30 or 31. Those half birthdays fall in February: on February 28 in a common year and February 29 in a leap year. Every other half birthday keeps the same month and day every year. A February 29 birthday always has its half birthday on August 29.
How to Find Your Next Half Birthday
To find your next half birthday, add 6 months to your last birthday; if that date has passed, add 6 months to your next birthday instead. The calculator does this from today's date and shows the days left. On October 30, 2026, someone born on March 15 has a next half birthday on 15 September 2027, 320 days away.
Why Do People Celebrate Half Birthdays?
People celebrate half birthdays for 4 main reasons: summer birthdays that miss the school year, birthdays that clash with holidays, baby milestones and a mid-year excuse to get together. A child born in July celebrates with classmates in January, and someone born on December 25 gets a June 25 celebration of their own.
When Is My Half Birthday?
Your half birthday is 6 months after your birthday, on the same day of the month. Born on April 10? Your half birthday is October 10. Born on October 15? It is April 15. Born on July 22? It is January 22. Enter your date of birth for the exact date and a countdown.
How Do I Calculate My Half Birthday?
To calculate your half birthday, add 6 to your birth month and keep the same day. Subtract 12 when the month number goes past 12: a November (11) birthday becomes 17 − 12 = 5, May. When that day does not exist in the new month, use the month's last day.
What Is the Formula for a Half Birthday?
The formula for a half birthday is half month = birth month + 6, minus 12 if the result is over 12, and half day = the smaller of your birth day and the days in the half month. In a spreadsheet, =EDATE(A1,6) returns the half birthday for a date of birth in A1 and handles month ends the same way.
Is a Half Birthday Exactly Six Months After Your Birthday?
Yes, a half birthday is exactly 6 calendar months after your birthday. It is not always exactly half the days of your birthday year. A March 15 birthday has a calendar half birthday on September 15 and an exact half (182 days) on September 13.
Is a Half Birthday 182 or 183 Days?
A half birthday is 181 to 184 days after your birthday by the calendar, and 182 or 183 days by the exact-half method. A 365-day year halves to 182.5 days and a 366-day year to 183. The calculator shows both dates, so you can pick the one you prefer.
What Is My Half Birthday If I Was Born on August 31?
If you were born on August 31, your half birthday is February 28, or February 29 in a leap year. February 31 does not exist, so the half birthday moves to the last valid day of February. In 2027 it is February 28; in 2028, a leap year, it is February 29.
What Is My Half Birthday If I Was Born on February 29?
If you were born on February 29, your half birthday is August 29, every year. August always has a 29th, so leap-day babies get a fixed half birthday even in the 3 years out of 4 when their real birthday is missing from the calendar.
How Many Days Until My Half Birthday?
The days until your half birthday are the days from today to the next date 6 months after a birthday, from 0 to 184. Enter your date of birth and the calculator counts them. From October 30, 2026, a March 15 birthday has its half birthday 320 days away.
When Is a Baby's First Half Birthday?
A baby's first half birthday is the day the baby turns 6 months old: 6 calendar months after the birth date. A baby born on 31 January 2026 has a first half birthday on 31 July 2026. That date often lines up with the 6-month well-baby check, and many parents mark it with a "half cake" photo.
