An age difference calculator finds the exact age gap between two people by counting from the earlier date of birth to the later one. Enter 2 dates of birth, or 3, and the calculator returns the difference in years, months and days, names the older person and converts the gap into months, weeks, days, hours and decimal years.
The calculator gives 4 main benefits: an exact answer to the day, correct handling of leap years and month lengths, a third person for families and groups, and full privacy. Couples use it to check an age gap, parents use it for sibling spacing, and genealogists use it for family trees. It has 5 parts: optional name fields, date pickers for each date of birth, a Compare ages button, the result display and an interactive timeline that shows the gap across 2 lifetimes.
What Is an Age Difference?
An age difference is the time between two people's dates of birth (DOB), written in years, months and days. Age gap, age disparity and date of birth difference are 3 other names for the same measure. The formula is short: Age Difference = Later Date − Earlier Date.
The gap is fixed at the moment the younger person is born. Someone born on 17 April 1990 is 4 years, 4 months and 12 days older than someone born on 29 August 1994, today, in 10 years and for life.
Age difference is a calendar fact, not a compatibility score. Horoscope and numerology compatibility come from other systems; for star signs, the Zodiac Sign Calculator gives both people's signs.
How to Use the Age Difference Calculator

The date fields accept dates from January 1, 1900. Type dates in the format your device shows: mm/dd/yyyy in the United States, dd/mm/yyyy in India, the UK and most of Europe.
How to Calculate Age Difference Between Two People
To calculate the age difference between two people, write the later date of birth above the earlier one as yyyy mm dd and subtract each column from right to left: days, then months, then years. Borrow when a top number is smaller.
No borrowing
25 − 17 = 8 days, 12 − 8 = 4 months and 2025 − 2002 = 23 years. The age difference is 23 years, 4 months and 8 days.
With borrowing
Both the days and the months come out negative, so both need a borrow. The 4 stages below show each one.
25 November 1998 to 10 February 2003
25 is bigger than 10, so borrow a month.
January has 31 days: 10 + 31 = 41, and 41 − 25 = 16 days.
11 is bigger than 1: borrow 12 months. 13 − 11 = 2 months, and 2003 becomes 2002.
2002 − 1998 = 4. The gap is 4;2;16.
The borrowed month is the month before the later date's month, so its real length counts: 28 or 29 days for February, 30 for April, June, September and November, and 31 for the rest. That borrowing logic is where most hand calculations go wrong.
How to Calculate Age Difference in Different Units
To calculate age difference in different units, find the total days between the 2 dates of birth first, then multiply or divide. The gap between 17 April 1990 and 29 August 1994 comes out in 8 units, from years, months and days down to seconds.
The calculator works with dates, not clock times, so hours, minutes and seconds assume both people were born at the same time of day. Decimal years divide by 365.2425, the average length of a Gregorian year.
Age Difference vs Difference Between Current Ages
The age difference is the fixed gap between 2 dates of birth, while the difference between current ages in whole years changes during the year. For a gap of 4 years, 4 months and 12 days, today's ages differ by 4 for part of the year and by 5 for the rest, depending on whose birthday has passed.
Current ages on the 1st of each month
Person A turns 36 on April 17 and Person B turns 32 on August 29. Between those 2 birthdays, the current ages differ by 5. The real age difference stays 4;4;12 all year.
The fixed gap, the shrinking ratio
2 lives on 1 time axis. Drag the slider through the years: the gap never moves, but the ratio between the 2 ages gets closer to 1 every year.
Showing Person A (17 April 1990) and Person B (29 August 1994). Enter 2 dates of birth in the calculator to load your own.

Age gaps in US marriages, 2022
Pew Research Center analysis of US Census Bureau data covering about 680,000 opposite-sex married couples in the 2022 American Community Survey (ACS). The average gap was 2.2 years in 2022, down from 2.4 years in 2000 and 4.9 years in 1880.
Half your age plus seven
The rule says the youngest partner is half your age plus 7, and the oldest is (your age − 7) × 2. It goes back at least to the French writer Max O'Rell in 1901 and is nicknamed the "creepiness rule" online. It is a social rule of thumb, not research.
| Your age | 18 | 20 | 22 | 25 | 30 | 35 | 40 | 50 | 60 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Youngest partner (age ÷ 2 + 7) | 16 | 17 | 18 | 19.5 | 22 | 24.5 | 27 | 32 | 37 |
| Oldest partner ((age − 7) × 2) | 22 | 26 | 30 | 36 | 46 | 56 | 66 | 86 | 106 |
An 18-year-old and a 22-year-old sit on the edge of the rule: 22 ÷ 2 + 7 = 18, and (18 − 7) × 2 = 22.
How Leap Years and Calendar Dates Affect Age Differences
Leap years and calendar dates change the days in an age difference, but not the years, months and days logic. A year holds 365 or 366 days, and a month holds 28 to 31, so the same "1 year" gap is 365 days for some pairs and 366 for others. The 4 cases below show the edges.
| Case | Earlier date | Later date | Age difference | Days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leap day to the next day | 29 February 2000 | 1 March 2000 | 0 years, 0 months and 1 day | 1 |
| A year that ends on a leap day | 28 February 2003 | 29 February 2004 | 1 year, 0 months and 1 day | 366 |
| Leap day to February 28 | 29 February 2000 | 28 February 2001 | 1 year, 0 months and 0 days | 365 |
| Across a 29-day February | 31 January 2020 | 1 March 2020 | 0 years, 1 month and 1 day | 30 |
Days available to borrow, by month
A leap year has 366 days and comes every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400: 2000 was a leap year, 1900 and 2100 are not.
Special Cases When Calculating Age Differences
There are 6 special cases when calculating age differences, including twins, birth years without dates and 3 or more people.
Twins
Twins born on the same day have a gap of 0. Twins born at 11:58 pm on December 31, 2025 and 12:03 am on January 1, 2026 have different birthdays, different birth years and a 1-day age difference.
Same date of birth
2 unrelated people born on the same date have an age difference of 0 days.
Birth years only
1990 and 1994 allow any gap from 3 years, 0 months and 1 day to 4 years, 11 months and 30 days. Use full dates for an exact answer.
Different time zones
Use the date on each birth certificate. A birth just after midnight in Tokyo falls on the previous day in New York.
Parent and child
The age difference between a parent and a child is the parent's exact age on the child's birthday.
3 or more people
3 people make 3 pairs. The calculator shows every pair and the spread from oldest to youngest.
Birth spacing for Maya, Omar, Zoe
| Pair | Age difference | Y;M;D | Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maya and Omar | 2 years, 7 months and 23 days | 2;7;23 | 968 |
| Omar and Zoe | 3 years, 7 months and 19 days | 3;7;19 | 1,327 |
| Maya and Zoe | 6 years, 3 months and 11 days | 6;3;11 | 2,295 |
Common Mistakes When Calculating Age Differences
There are 6 common mistakes when calculating age differences, including subtracting birth years only, comparing current ages and dividing days by 365.
Subtracting birth years only
✕ 1994 − 1990 = 4 years, no months or days
✓ 17 April 1990 to 29 August 1994 = 4;4;12
Comparing current ages
✕ "36 − 31 = 5 years" in June 2026
✓ The real gap is 4 years, 4 months and 12 days
Dividing days by 365
✕ 1,595 ÷ 365 = 4.370 years
✓ Count real months and leap days
Using 30-day months
✕ Borrowing 30 days for a 31-day January
✓ Borrow the real length of the month before
Swapping day and month
✕ Reading 04/08/1994 as April 8 on an Indian form
✓ US forms use mm/dd/yyyy; India and the UK use dd/mm/yyyy
Counting both end dates
✕ Adding 1 day "to include both birthdays"
✓ Count the days between, as an age does
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Calculate the Age Difference Between Two People?
To calculate the age difference between two people, subtract the earlier date of birth from the later one: days first, then months, then years. Borrow the days of the previous month when the days come out negative, and borrow 12 months when the months come out negative. People born on 17 April 1990 and 29 August 1994 are 4 years, 4 months and 12 days apart. Enter both dates of birth in the age difference calculator to skip the arithmetic.
How Many Years Older Am I Than Someone Else?
You are older than someone else by the complete years between your 2 dates of birth, plus the extra months and days. Someone born on 17 April 1990 is 4 years older than someone born on 29 August 1994, with 4 months and 12 days on top. Comparing today's ages in whole years gives 4 or 5, depending on whose birthday has passed.
How Can I Find the Age Gap Between Two Dates of Birth?
To find the age gap between two dates of birth, count from the earlier date to the later one in years, months and days. The order you enter the dates in does not matter; the calculator sorts them and names the older person. 17 August 2002 and 25 December 2025 are 23 years, 4 months and 8 days apart.
Is Age Difference the Same as Age Gap?
Yes, age difference and age gap mean the same thing: the time between 2 dates of birth. "Age gap" shows up more for couples and relationships, and "age difference" more for siblings, forms and records. Age disparity is a third, more formal name.
Does the Age Difference Between Two People Change Over Time?
No, the age difference between two people never changes. Both people age 1 day per day, so a gap of 4 years, 4 months and 12 days stays the same for life. What changes is the ratio: when the younger person is 5, the older one is 9.4 (1.87 times older), and at 40 the ratio drops to 1.11.
How Can I Calculate the Age Difference Between Siblings?
To calculate the age difference between siblings, enter 2 children's dates of birth, or add a third person to compare 3 siblings at once. The calculator shows every pair. Maya (10 March 2015) and Omar (2 November 2017) are 2 years, 7 months and 23 days apart, and Omar and Zoe (21 June 2021) are 3 years, 7 months and 19 days apart.
Can Two People Have an Age Difference of Zero?
Yes, two people born on the same date have an age difference of zero. Twins born minutes apart on the same day show 0 days. Twins born either side of midnight have different birthdays and a 1-day age difference, even when only a few minutes separate them.
How Do I Calculate Age Difference in Months?
To calculate age difference in months, multiply the full years by 12 and add the extra months. A gap of 4 years, 4 months and 12 days equals 4 × 12 + 4 = 52 months, with 12 days left over.
Does the Age Difference Calculator Include Leap Years?
Yes, the age difference calculator includes leap years. It counts real month lengths of 28, 29, 30 and 31 days and every February 29. 29 February 2000 to 1 March 2000 is 1 day apart, and 28 February 2003 to 29 February 2004 is 1 year, 0 months and 1 day, or 366 days. In years without a February 29, the calculator counts February 28 as the anniversary of a leap-day birth.
Can I Calculate Age Difference in Excel?
Yes, you can calculate age difference in Excel with the DATEDIF function. Put the 2 dates of birth in A1 and B1, then use:
=DATEDIF(MIN(A1,B1),MAX(A1,B1),"Y")for full years=DATEDIF(MIN(A1,B1),MAX(A1,B1),"YM")for the extra months=DATEDIF(MIN(A1,B1),MAX(A1,B1),"MD")for the extra days=ABS(B1-A1)for total days
DATEDIF returns #NUM! when the first date is later, so MIN and MAX sort the dates. Microsoft lists "MD" as unreliable near month ends; check that figure with the calculator. Google Sheets supports the same DATEDIF formulas.
Is This Age Difference Calculator Free to Use?
Yes, this age difference calculator is free to use. There is no sign-up, names are optional, and the calculation runs in your browser, so no dates of birth are uploaded. Copy or share the result in 1 tap.
